Mentorship

Since 2016, I’ve participated in the development, pilot, or iteration of over 5 mentorship programs. Now I sit on developmental committees and advise organizations on mentorship best practices. The most recent mentorship initiative I’ve developed is featured here.

RING Mentorship

  • Utilizing a circular mentorship model, RING encourages curiosity, candid feedback and self-awareness. Giving group members the confidence to consider new ideas and prioritize their success. RING is open to all School of Medicine Staff, who are looking to gain a deeper understanding of the organization and network with their colleagues.

  • RING is a remote-first, group-based mentorship program which is mentor-led and community-driven. The goal of this program is to create an engaging professional development opportunity for School of Medicine Staff. Mentors and mentees will be provided materials for a multitude of discussion topics. In this pilot, we are looking for staff who believe they would benefit from meeting regularly with up to four colleagues over the course of a four month period.

Those who have volunteered for this pilot are from all over the organization, from senior level executives to brand new front-line employees.

We are excited to review the results and conduct small group sessions to discover potential iterations and/or potential for scale and expansion.

  • RING is the second mentorship program under the Stanford Medicine umbrella. The more traditional program is wonderful but very restrictive. Restrictions include hierarchy and devotion which limits the audience to about 1500/5000 employees.

RING was developed to reach the entire employee population. With the debut in January 2022 we sought to discover the best ratio of mentor to mentees with groups of 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4.

In May, 2022, we will receive the data to drive the program forward as we debut the second pilot round. In September, 2022, we will evaluate the potential for cementing the program as an offering for all staff across all entities (Stanford Healthcare, Stanford Children’s Hospital, and Stanford University).

  • So far, all participants have continued in the pilot. The pilot that began in January 2022 ends in April 2022.

10 of the 70 participants have applied to an opposing role (e.g. from mentee to mentor) for the second pilot/cohort beginning in May 2022.

Throughout the organization, including the greater community of Stanford University, responses and feedback have been overwhelmingly positive. However, the only feedback we have so far is from the program guide feedback survey, the pulse survey, and the orientation feedback survey. The program feedback survey debuts April 2022 and will be reviewed alongside all previously gathered data in May 2022.

  • RING targets first-time mentors and mentees who are new to the organization. Because of this, support is given through Program Guides.

Program Guides provide programming for each meeting. To see examples, check out the website.
